Method

How to use this

  1. 1. Pick few, not many. A rulebook you can read in thirty seconds is a rulebook you will still be following in month three.
  2. 2. Cover risk first. Risk and position sizing rules decide how long you stay in the game. Entry rules only decide what you do while you are there.
  3. 3. Print it and keep it visible. A rule on a screen you have closed is not a rule.
  4. 4. Change one rule at a time. Review weekly, count the breaks, and only edit after a proper sample of trades.

These rules are educational process guidelines, not investment advice, and none of them is a signal to buy or sell anything. Trading in financial markets carries risk, including the loss of your capital.

Trading rulebook FAQ

What is the Trading Rulebook builder?

A free tool for writing your own trading rules. You pick from a library of 48 rules, 8 in each of 6 groups, and the tool lays your picks out as a one-page rulebook. Each rule is a process guideline for how to behave around a trade, never a call to buy or sell.

What should a trading rulebook include?

This tool groups rules into 6 categories: Risk, Position sizing, Entry, Exit, Psychology and Review. Risk is what you are willing to lose, decided before the trade. Entry and Exit cover when you get in and how the trade ends. Psychology covers the state you may trade in, and Review covers how you check yourself after the market closes.

How many rules can I put in my rulebook?

Up to 20. The tool starts warning at 14 rules, because the page gets full and a shorter rulebook is easier to read before each session. If you do not know where to start, Load the starter 8 fills in a short first set.

How do I turn my picks into a rulebook?

Tick the rules you will follow, and the Your rulebook panel updates as you go. You can name the rulebook, then download it as a text file or press Print or save as PDF. Your picks are saved in this browser.

What does the line under each rule mean?

Every rule comes with one short line saying why it exists. That line is shown in the picker and is included in the downloaded text file and the printed sheet, so you remember the reason as well as the rule.

Watch: why the rules decide it

The difference between a trader and a gambler is a written rule they still follow on a bad day. This is that argument in full.

Rules are easy to write. The hard part is following them.

Our programs teach the process behind these rules, trade by trade. Take the 2-minute quiz to find your fit.
