How this is calculated
India VIX is an annualised implied volatility, the market’s estimate of how much Nifty is expected to swing over a year, quoted as a percent. To read it for a shorter window you de-annualise it: divide by the square root of (365 / days). Fewer days means a smaller slice of that yearly volatility, so a 14 VIX projects a much tighter move over one day than over a month.
The 1 sigma band (about 68% of outcomes) is the price plus or minus that horizon volatility percent. The 2 sigma band (about 95%) is twice as wide. This assumes returns follow a normal distribution, so it is an estimate of the range, not a guarantee of where price will go.
India VIX calculator FAQ
- What is the India VIX formula for the daily Nifty range?
- Daily move in percent = India VIX divided by the square root of 365. At a VIX of 14 that is 14 / 19.1 = 0.73%. On a Nifty at 22,000 the one sigma daily range is about 22,000 plus or minus 161 points.
- Why do you take a square root of days?
- India VIX is quoted for a full year. Volatility grows with the square root of time, not in a straight line, so a 7 day window is VIX / sqrt(365 / 7), which is 1.94% at a VIX of 14. A 30 day window is 4.01%. Four times the days gives only twice the range.
- How do I find the India VIX daily range for Nifty?
- Set the horizon to 1 Day, enter the Nifty close and the India VIX close, and read the 68% band. The tool fills in the last closing values for you. Edit them if you want a live number from your broker.
- What is a normal India VIX level?
- There is no official normal. Compare today with the last few months of India VIX. A higher VIX means the market expects bigger moves, so the range this calculator shows gets wider. A lower VIX means a tighter range.
- Does the range mean Nifty will stay inside it?
- No. The 68% band means Nifty should close inside it about two days in three if returns are normally distributed. Real markets have fat tails, so a move outside the band is normal and a move outside the 95% band can still happen. Use it to size risk, not to predict.
